It has been a big, big change since we moved up here to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. To be exact, we moved to Grand Marais, Michigan. We purchased a 20+ acre Apple Orchard that has our two bedroom home on it and two sleeping cabins. We saw the opportunity to create a really awesome experience for visitors by creating a “Glampground”!
Jeremy and I have spent many years plotting our escape from city life and last October it happened! We sold our home located in the Metro Detroit area, packed up a Uhaul and crossed the Mighty Mackinaw Bridge to our future! We made it just in time for what turned out to be the worst winter since the 1940’s ( or so we’ve been told ). When we set out to do something you can bet it’s gonna be big. This time it was big snow, so much snow.
When we lived downstate the seasons just came and went. I didn’t pay to much attention to the changing weather other then how it affected my wardrobe. I didn’t worry about white-outs, long power outages in -20 degree weather with 80 mph winds whipping and lashing against the house. I was never concerned about 8 foot snow drifts blocking your front door or garage, I never had to make sure that I had some sort of ice spikes to put on my shoes so I could safely navigate the grocery store parking lot that was over an hour away. I never had a winter survival pack in my car in the event the car broke down or I found myself in a situation where I couldn’t drive safely and had to pull off the road for hours till the storm passed. If my car broke down while living down state, I called a tow truck from the warmth of the near by Starbucks or Panera and ate something yummy while waiting. Up here in the U.P. life is just a little bit different. With all that said, I am writing today with excitement because we survived the winter of 2019! Now we are preparing to kick off our first Glamping Season and couldn’t be more excited! We have several bookings already and are busily preparing the cabins for our guests arrival. Stay tuned for future blog posts while we jump head first into this awesome, new adventure!
We have just celebrated 1 year in business here at Superior Orchards! What an amazing ride this has been. In October of 2018, we sold our family home down state, packed up our belongings and two dogs (we now have three 🤗) and headed north. As far north as you can get in Michigan, to the Upper Peninsula. As new “Empty Nesters”, we embraced the opportunity to start our second phase of life and do something we had only dreamt of doing once upon a time.
We purchased 20+ acres that included an Apple Orchard in beautiful Grand Marais, Michigan. The property was already fit with two “sleeping” cabins and a full heated bath in the pole barn. With a little sprucing up and creativity, a “Glampground” was born. We have been blessed with guests from around the globe during the summer months and many folks from neighboring states have graced our property for snowmobile season. One would think I had some horror stories to combine with the joys that we have experienced, you know, for dramatic effect, but I don’t.
There is truly something special about the people that choose to visit and experience Grand Marais, Michigan and the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore. Year round, there is always something amazing to see and do up here. From the gorgeous, frozen ice caves and mounds of snow in the winter, to waterfalls and an abundance of nature in the summer, your eyes never tire from taking in the sites and life experiences the great north has to offer.
We have witnessed the mighty Grey Wolf walk across the street in front of us as if we were in HIS way, to baby bear cubs climbing the pine trees in the front yard to retrieve, or steal the woodpecker’s suet. Sunsets that somehow always seem different from the last, to sunrises that are ceremonially summoned by the call of the many bird species that adorn our property. It has been an amazing year, and we have been blessed to call Superior Orchards home.
Here’s to another terrific year and many more experiences. You are welcome to snag a piece of paradise and come stay with us, we will keep the cabin warm for you.
